What is Hernia?
A hernia occurs when the contents of a body cavity bulge out of the area where they are normally contained. These contents, usually portions of intestine or abdominal fatty tissue, are enclosed in the thin membrane that naturally lines the inside of the cavity.
There are various types of hernias like Inguinal, Femoral, Umblical, Obturator, Incisional, Epigastric etc. All hernias should be repaired to avoid the possibility of future intestinal strangulation.
Why is Hernia surgery needed?
Most hernias are caused by a combination of pressure and an opening or weakness of muscle or connective tissue. The pressure pushes an organ or tissue through the opening or weak spot. Sometimes the muscle weakness is present at birth but more often it occurs later in life. Anything that causes an increase in abdominal pressure can cause a hernia, including obesity, lifting heavy objects, diarrhea or constipation, or persistent coughing or sneezing. Poor nutrition, smoking, and overexertion can weaken muscles and contribute to the likelihood of a hernia.
Hernia Surgery is of two types Hernioraphy and Hernioplasty. In hernioraphy the hernia is repaired without using any implants like mesh etc whereas in hernioplasty hernia is treated with the use of mesh and tacker.
