Uterine Fibroids are non-cancerous (benign) tumors that grow from the muscle layers of the uterus (womb). Fibroids are growths of smooth muscle and fibrous tissue. Fibroids can vary in size, from that of a bean to as large as a melon. Overweight and obese women are at significantly higher risk of developing fibroids, compared to women of normal weight.
The medical name for the fibroid removal surgery is myomectomy. The surgery is done either through an abdominal route or through laparoscopic method. The decision of kind of surgery to be done depends upon the size of fibroid and its location. Fibroid in the uterus affects the chances of the woman in getting pregnant. Smaller fibroids are normally not treated but if the size of the fibroid is big then it has to be removed before the woman can get pregnant. The surgery for fibroid removal is to be done in such a manner that the potency of the uterus is preserved.
Myomectomy or fibroid removal surgery is recommend if the fibroids are causing symptoms such as:
Pelvic pain
Heavy periods
Irregular bleeding
Frequent urination
Myomectomy is an option for women with fibroids who wish to get pregnant in the future, or who want to keep their uterus for another reason. Apart from this in case you are having any of the above symptoms due to fibroids and they are hampering the chances of pregnancy then the gynaecologist in India would recommend to go for a fibroid surgery with uterus preservation. Many other options for uterine fibroid exist like Radiofrequency ablation, Uterine Artery Embolization, MRI guided Focussed Ultrasound Surgery and Robotic Myomectomy.
Dr Anjali Kumar, Dr Balvin Kaur, Dr Sadhna Sharma and Dr Sumita Singh are the best gynaecologists and surgeon in India for uterine fibroid surgery. It is a common surgery in India and is done both through abdominal route and through laparoscopic method.
The cost of laparoscopic myomectomy is USD 3200 while the cost of the open surgery for uterine fibroid removal is USD 2800. The hospital stay for laparoscopic surgery is 1-2 days while the cost for the abdominal surgery is 3-4 days. The cost of Radiofrequncy Ablation for Uterine Fibroids would be USD 3500 while the cost of MRI guided Focussed Ultrasound Surgery would be USD 3000. Each procedure has its pros and cons and the patient should discuss all these issues with the surgeon before opting for any line of treatment. Post discharge stay in India would be for about 2 weeks. Sometimes the surgery may need blood transfusion, in that case the cost of blood products would be extra which would be over and above the package cost.
