Uterine Fibroids are non-cancerous (benign) tumors that grow from the muscle layers of the uterus (womb). Fibroids are growths of smooth muscle and fibrous tissue. Fibroids can vary in size, from that of a bean to as large as a melon. Overweight and obese women are at significantly higher risk of developing fibroids, compared to women of normal weight.
The medical name for the fibroid removal surgery is myomectomy. The surgery is done either through an abdominal route or through laparoscopic method. The decision of kind of surgery to be done depends upon the size of fibroid and its location. Fibroid in the uterus affects the chances of the woman in getting pregnant. Smaller fibroids are normally not treated but if the size of the fibroid is big then it has to be removed before the woman can get pregnant.
