ACL / PCL Repair at GNH Hospital Gurgaon India
What is ACL / PCL Repair ?
It is the reconstruction of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) or Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL ). ACL or Anterior Cruciate ligament is one ligament at the front of the knee and Posterior Cruciate Ligament is at the back of the knee which provides stability to the joint during movements by preventing the top and bottom of the knee from sliding back and forth. ACL or PCL injuries occur due to trauma usually in a sport or fitness activity. The ligament gets stretched or tears either partially or completely when the foot is firmly planted the knee locks and twists or pivots at the same time. This commonly occurs in basketball, football, soccer, and gymnastics, where a sudden change in direction stresses and damages the ligament. Women are more prone to ACL and PCL injuries than men because of different anatomy. Best results are achieved when the treatment is started as soon as the Ligament injury occurs. At GNH Hospital Gurgaon the department of orthopaedics is backed by a full fledged physiotherapy department to provide comprehensive solutions for the patients of ACL or PCL Injury.
ACL Repair Surgery is much simpler than PCL repair due to the accessibility for the surgeon. Many orthopaedic surgeons are able to give good results in ACL Repair surgery but only a handful of surgeons have a track record of giving 100% results in PCL repair surgery and Dr. Praveen Tittal at GNH Hospital is one of those. Dr. Tittal has done more than 2500 Arthroscopic Surgeries of Knee, Shoulder and other joints.
Who should consider undergoing ACL / PCL Repair ?
Patient and Doctor are the major decision maker for the type of treatment to be given. Patient's requirements from the joint after the injury has healed will be a deciding factor. At GNH Hospital, Gurgaon, our orthopedic surgeons will explain to you and help you in taking important decisions regarding the surgery. In India the arthroscopic repair of ACL / PCL is available at very few hospitals. Finding good surgeons is even more difficult. Dr Praveen Tittal at GNH Hospital specializes in all kinds of arthroscopic surgeries of knee joint, shoulder joint and hip joint.
Nonsurgical treatment may be appropriate for patients who are less active, do not participate in activities that require running, jumping or pivoting, and are interested in physical therapy to regain range of motion and strength to match the uninjured leg. However in cases of complete tear of the ACL or the PCL ligament surgery is the only option.
What does ACL / PCL repair involve?
The anterior cruciate ligament or the posterior cruciate ligament is reconstructed using arthroscopic surgery which is a newer and efficient method. There are variety of techniques, depending on the type of tear and what other injuries may be associated. The decision as to what surgical option is appropriate is individualized and tailored to a patient's specific situation. During the reconstruction some implants are used. At GNH Hospital Dr Praveen Tittal uses implants from Smith and Nephew, a UK based implant manufacturer.
Physical therapy is the mainstay of rehabilitation regardless of whether or not a surgery is performed.
